My Story

My curiosity of the (dis)ability world started at age 9 when I started volunteering to help kids with Cerebral Palsy ambulate around campus. But my passion started when I went to my son's first IEP meeting. The team was not treating me as an equal member or someone who had a say in her child's education.

Seeing the divide between his peers grow deeper as he got older strengthened my drive to make sure he was getting the same chance at a good education, and not being written off because teachers didn't know how to teach him.

But I didn't know how to do this or where to start! It was overwhelming, emotional and sometimes felt hopeless and EXHAUSTING! I felt like I had a second full time job. This is why it's important for me to share my story, so you can avoid the huge mistakes I made and have a more graceful and enjoyable journey into Special Education.

My passion for this work continues to grow insatiably as well as my dedication to helping change the social narrative that the disability world is a negative or "less fortunate" one. This world belongs to all of us equally, not just those of us who are non-disabled. And as I stumble through, it's a good reminder that all "able bodied" people are really temporarily non-disabled.
